Culture

The RPK Covenant

  1. Our Commitments

We say what is true before we say what is welcome. What enters a mandate stays inside it. The principal who accepts an engagement is the one who works it, and stays in the room until the outcome is real. RPK Global advises institutions, family offices, and investors at the intersection of geopolitics and capital. For us, work is done well only when it is done correctly. The firm therefore operates under a written code of practice, modeled on the professional-responsibility frameworks of the leading international law firms and the standards bodies of the advisory professions, and adapted to the specific duties of strategic counsel in Washington. The code binds every principal, advisor, and partner engaged in the firm’s work.

  2. What We Expect from Clients

Serious counsel requires serious clients. We ask for a lawful purpose, stated plainly; access to the people whose decisions we are asked to shape; and the discretion we extend, returned. We also ask for the facts as they are, not as anyone wishes them to be, because counsel built on partial truth fails at the worst possible moment. We expect clients to respect the lines we will not cross: no request for material non-public information, no payment or favor that could not be published in full daylight, no proximity to sanctioned parties or opaque structures, and the same standard extended to every partner, vendor, and intermediary engaged on the client’s behalf. Where those conditions hold, we commit completely, and the client holds a genuine claim on the principal’s attention for the life of the mandate.

  3. How We Protect Integrity

We check conflicts before we accept a mandate. We work from lawful access and the public record, we comply with U.S. disclosure frameworks including the Lobbying Disclosure Act and the Foreign Agents Registration Act, and we respect the lines that regulated markets draw. Our scale permits us an older standard than the industry’s walls and waivers: where a real conflict exists, we refuse the engagement. Every registrable act is registered; disclosure is designed in advance and never suffered as surprise; matters adjacent to sovereign interests are reviewed by independent counsel before any contact is made. Because our clients include the owners of publicly listed enterprises, we maintain information disciplines built to the standard of securities practice: material non-public information is neither sought nor used. When an engagement would cost the firm its independence, or an institution its integrity, we decline it. Reputations in this business are built over decades and spent in an afternoon.

Our Beginning

History

Born from experience. Built for the long adjustment.

  1. Origins

    First principles

The Real.Politik Group dream begins with a Panamanian lawyer trained in the disciplines of a maritime crossroads. Carlos Ruiz Hernandez took his degree in law and political science in Panama City, served as corporate counsel, then moved to New Orleans, where he advised U.S. energy ventures entering Panama and Central America and earned two LL.M. degrees at Tulane, in admiralty law and in energy law: the two subjects the Canal has always taught.

  2. 2011 onward

    A wider field of view

In 2011 Panama sent him to New York as Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where he led the country’s delegation, negotiated General Assembly resolutions, helped secure the Security Council seat he would oversee 15 years later as Vice Chancellor of Panama, and worked on the frameworks that became the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. Years of research, teaching, and study at Johns Hopkins SAIS and the University of Chicago followed, turning practice into method.

  3. Washington

    Counsel across borders

In Washington he worked on market-entry strategy for the Americas at Allen & Overy, now A&O Shearman, advising partners and sovereign clients on international arbitration and trade disputes. In the same years he became a published voice on hemispheric strategy through CSIS, the Wilson Center, and the Inter-American Dialogue.

  4. 2024–2025

    A firm takes shape

He accepted the role of Deputy Secretary of State of Panama in early 2024, serving as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and directing Panama’s foreign policy through the most demanding U.S.–Panama moment since the Canal handover. He managed negotiations with Washington, Beijing, and Brussels and represented Panama before the United Nations Security Council. He left office in April 2025. The Real.Politik Group was founded in Washington that summer.

  5. Today

    Built for the long adjustment

The firm carries that career into private service. From Washington, RPK Global selects its clients and advises boards, investors, and governments through the longest geopolitical adjustment of recent times: the era in which policy and capital have merged, and advantage belongs to those who can read both. The model has not changed since the founding: institutional discipline, discreet influence, and crafted intelligence, delivered quietly and with precision, so that our clients act instead of react.
